Ted’s Bear
This charming bronze sculpture depicts a seated bear with a playful, cartoonish form that radiates warmth and whimsy. Polished to a golden shine, the bear gleams with a life of its own, its surface reflecting light like a precious artefact of joy. As my first bronze sculpture, it holds deep sentimental value—it was created during my university years as a celebratory gift for my sister, marking the birth of her firstborn child.
The bear’s texture tells its own story. Every trace of the plasticine used in its creation remains etched into the bronze, giving the surface an inviting, fun quality that invites viewers to touch and explore its handmade origins. This tactile texture enhances the bear’s approachable, endearing personality, reminiscent of a beloved toy brought to life.
The sculpture is interactive, capable of standing in multiple positions—either perched upright on its feet or nestled comfortably on its bum. This adaptability lends the piece a playful energy, encouraging viewers to engage with it beyond passive observation.
More than just a gift or an object, this bear represents a pivotal moment in my journey as an artist. It was during this project that I discovered the transformative magic of bronze casting—watching the molten metal take shape awakened a deep passion and excitement that continues to fuel my work today. This sculpture, a celebration of life and new beginnings, is as much a tribute to my nephew as it is to the beginning of my lifelong love affair with bronze.
